Screen Time: How it affects well-being

With so many people locked up at home, the use of digital technology has grown more than before. People use digital devices to access information for work, study, entertainment and social interaction. While it provides space for many, it also fosters reliance on digital technology, which is linked to the hours spent in front of a screen. In the long run, using a digital screen for too long may have a negative impact on one’s well-being.

1. Physically active tends to be lower

People who are attached to the screens are often inactive. Sitting in front of a computer or television for an extended period of time can increase the risk of gaining weight and developing diseases such as diabetes and other metabolic disorders.

2. Sleep cycle may be disrupted

Using devices at night can interfere with sleep quality because the light from the screen affects the body’s internal clock. Blue light tends to make us more alert, which causes us to stay awake and have difficulty sleeping. The habits of using devices before bed can prevent us from getting a good night’s sleep.

3. Mental health issue

Screen time may increase the risk of depression and anxiety. People who spend more time watching entertainment are more likely to experience anxiety symptoms. Furthermore, neurologists are concerned about the effects on the brain, such as memory, attention and brain development.

4. Problems with vision

Long periods of staring at a screen can result in eye strain, which can be unpleasant. blurred vision, fatigue, tearing and headaches are some of the symptoms. It is important to take a break every two hours and to position the computer at the proper distance angle.
